A new adventure every day…

HANOI, VIETNAM – It’s a new adventure every time we step out of the apartment. Seriously, it really is. Take today for instance. Soon you get to know your neighborhood, the stores, the market and what is around. Hanoi just has soooo much!

Today we stepped out of the apartment at about 1 p.m. – lunch time. There were motorbikes parked everywhere; I mean everywhere. “That’s different,” we thought. Continue reading “A new adventure every day…”

We’ve spent ‘millions’ during our first month in Vietnam

One million Vietnamese Dong

HANOI, VIETNAM – Let me first state that our lifestyle in Hanoi is anything but lavish, and I’ll go into more detail about those “millions” in just a minute.

We’re currently living in a one-bedroom second-floor apartment on a busy residential/commercial street about a block away from a small lake. Our apartment is modest in size, roughly 600 square feet.

Inside the massive Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi’s Old Town Quarter

HANOI, VIETNAM – OK, I admit it, I was not prepared. There are over 7 million people in Hanoi, and well, goods have to come from somewhere and people have to be able to buy them. We hit the jackpot in the Dong Xuan Market in the Old Quarter. The words ‘huge’ and ‘expansive’ don’t even do it justice. Three floors, even an escalator, and many stairways.

Pounds, pence, meaty money and more

British coins from one pence to two pounds
British coins from one pence to two pounds

UNITED KINGDOM – We’ve been traveling around the United Kingdom for just over two months now, and I have to say…

Thank God for the metric system!

And thank God for decimal-denominated money.

Luckily for us, we haven’t had to deal with guineas, crowns, shillings, farthings or any other extinct denominations of British money. Continue reading “Pounds, pence, meaty money and more”
