EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND – The food here is really wonderful.
OK, I see Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald’s, but we don’t eat there even in the states. Otherwise, it is cooked to order and takes a few minutes more. Time is no problem over a good beer anyway.
In the morning we can walk across the street to the little hole-in-the-wall grocery and buy fresh-baked croissants, meat, and curry or chicken pies for the rest of the day. It’s great this inner city living.
Eating on the road is always an adventure
Travel is always an adventure around every corner, and eating on the road is no different. Last night we ate East Indian food and the nan bread was a little sweet. Never had that before in the states, or in India.
Today we had lunch at El Cartel (Mexican – gosh, I don’t get the connection here). It was a hoot! Delicious, but not like any Mexican food I ever had. Which is just fine ’cause on the road it’s an adventure, like I say. Small hand-pressed wheat tortilla tacos, with wonderful filling. Looked just like any taco I ever had, but the taste was different.
We had two orders of tacos, with two tacos in each; one order was pork and the other duck (and they were the same price! I would never see that in the states). The pork had bits of sweet pineapple chunks, so it was sweet. The duck was so delicious; there was some sweetness too, somewhere in there. The refries, I think, were pureed kidney beans that came in a little shallow cast iron skillet on a breadboard (because of the hot skillet) topped with melted light cheese with a little chopped tomato and green onion on top.
The restaurant trappings were really “sweet” too. Black paint on every wall, a photo of Pancho Villa on horseback, a framed Madonna with halo (definitely bought at a Mexican market) on another wall. I did not try the margaritas, but that may be a good thing; I have very fond memories of those I’ve had in the past.
My point is that, apparently, Edinburgh cuisine has a little sweet tooth. It’s yummy!
Is sweet your favorite or would you rather have sour, spicy, bland or just natural flavors?
